64. 대조 구문
둘을 대비하거나, 두 요소를 나열하는 식의 문장으로서 대개 관용적 표현으로 암기해 두는 것이 좋은 경우가 많다.
- Some listened to him and others didn't.
(그의 말을 듣는 사람도 있었고, 듣지 않은 사람도 있었다.)
해설 : some ~, others ...는 대체적으로 전체를 둘로 나누어 "어떤 사람들은 ~, 또 어떤 사람들은 ..."하고 말하는 표현이다.
- She has two children, one in high school and the other a boy of thirteen.
(그녀에게는 두 명의 자식이 있는데, 한 명은 고등학생이고 다른 한 명은 13살 소년이다.)
해설 : one ~, the other ...는 둘 중 "하나는 ~, 다른 하나는..."라는 의미의 구문이다.
- To say is one thing and to do is another.
(말하는 것과 행동하는 것은 별개이다.)
해설 : one thing ~ another는 "서로 별개이다"라는 의미의 표현이 된다.
- Work and play are both good for the health; this gives us rest, and that gives us energy.
(일하는 것과 노는 것은 모두 건강에 좋다. 후자는 우리에게 휴식을 주고, 전자는 우리에게 활력소를 준다.)
해설 : this ~, that ...은 "후자는 ~, 전자는 ..."라는 의미의 구문으로서 this가 "후자"를 나타내고, that이 "전자"를 나타낸다는 것에 주의해야 한다.
- The lizard and the snake are both reptiles; the one has legs and the other none.
(도마뱀과 뱀은 둘 다 파충류이지만, 전자는 다리가 있고, 후자는 다리가 없다.)
해설 : the one ~, the other ...는 "전자는 ~, 후자는 ..."라는 뜻의 표현이다. the one이 "전자", the other가 "후자"이다.
- On the one hand, technology has made our standard of living very high. On the other hand, it has produced many unpleasant side effects.
(한편으로는 과학기술로 인해 우리의 생활수준이 무척 높아졌지만, 또 다른 한편으로는 불쾌한 부작용들이 많이 생겼다.)
해설 : on the one hand ~, on the other hand ...는 "한편으로는 ~, 다른 한편으로는 ..."의 뜻이다.
