문법 해설

조동사 Will

will은 본래 resolve(결심하다)란 뜻에서 출발한 낱말로서 의지를 나타내는 조동사이다. 즉 I will go.하면 I intend to go.의 뜻이 되는 것이다. 이와같이 will은 기본적으로 의지를 나타내지만 단순한 미래나 추측을 나타내기도 한다. 앞에서 언급한 shall의 용법 이외의 모든 경우에 미래시제 조동사는 will이 쓰인다고 생각해도 무방하다.

(1) 의지 미래

will은 주어의 의지를 나타낸다.

I will do what I have once determined to do.
(나는 일단 하기로 결심한 일은 할 것이다.)
I will not be caught again.
(나는 다시는 잡히지 않을 것이다.)
We will not talk any more of these things.
(우리는 이제 이런 이야기는 더 이상하지 않을 것이다.)
You may speak what you will.
(하고 싶은 말을 해도 좋다.)
Will you leave this house, or shall I turn you out?
(당신이 이 집에서 나가겠습니까, 아니면 내가 당신을 내쫓을까요?)
Won't you come in?
(들어오시지 않겠습니까?)

(2) 단순 미래

will은 단순한 미래의 일을 나타낸다.

I will be delighted to see you.
(기꺼이 당신을 만나 뵙겠습니다.)
You will hurt yourself if you're not careful.
(조심하지 않으면 다칠 것이다.)
He will have forgotten by the end of the term.
(그는 기말까지는 까맣게 잊고 있을 것이다.)
The next war will be more cruel than ever.
(다음 번 전쟁은 어느 때보다도 더 잔인해 질 것이다.)
It will not be long before he masters Russian.
(머지 않아 그는 러시아어를 마스터하게 될 것이다.)
When will you be able to leave for the U. S.?
(당신은 언제 미국으로 떠날 수 있게 되나요?)

(3) 추측을 나타내는 will

will은 미래의 일에 대한 추측을 나타낸다.

She will probably be right.
(아마 그녀가 옳을 것이다.)
Perhaps he will be free this evening.
(아마 오늘 저녁에는 그가 한가할 것이다.)
This will be our train, I suppose.
(아마 이것이 우리가 탈 기차일 것이다.)

(4) 경향을 나타내는 will

will은 주어의 습관이나 경향을 나타낸다.

The dog will bark when a stranger comes near it.
(개는 모르는 사람이 가까이 오면 짖는다.)
She will write for hours at a time.
(그녀는 한꺼번에 몇 시간씩 글을 쓴다.)
Boys will be boys.
(사내 아이는 역시 사내 아이다.)
Accidents will happen.
(사고란 일어나는 법이다.)

(5) 가능을 나타내는 will

will은 무생물 주어에 쓰여 가능이나 능력을 나타낸다.

The hall will seat five hundred.
(그 홀에는 500명을 앉힐 수가 있다.)
