과거완료 (2)

(1) 이루지 못한 일을 나타내는 과거완료

hope, wish, expect, intend가 과거완료로 쓰이면 이루지 못한 일을 나타내는 의미가 된다.

I had hoped to be a conductor.
(나는 지휘자가 되길 바랬지만 그러질 못했다.)
He had wished to go abroad.
(그는 외국에 가고 싶었지만 그러질 못했다.)
We had expected to finish the work immediately.
(우리는 그 일을 즉시 끝낼 것이라 예상했지만 그러질 못했다.)

(2) before나 when과 함께 쓰인 과거완료

과거완료 구문에 before나 when 등이 쓰이면 우리말 답게 적절히 의역하는 것이 좋다.

I had not waited long before he came.
(나는 그가 오기 전에 오랫 동안 기다리지 않았다. = 오래지 않아 그가 왔다.)
They had not gone far when they heard the police pursuing them.
(경찰이 쫓아오는 소리를 들었을 때 그들은 멀리 가지 못했었다. = 얼마 못 가 그들은 경찰이 쫓아오는 소리를 들었다.)
We had lived in the house only about six months when it was burnt down.
(그 집이 불에 타버렸을 때 우리는 그 집에서 겨우 6개월 정도 살았었다. = 그 집에 산지 불과 6개월쯤 되었을 때 그 집이 불에 타버렸다.)

(3) 관용적 표현으로 쓰이는 과거완료

"no sooner+과거완료 ~ than ...", "scarcely+과거완료 ~ before ...", "hardly+과거완료 ~ when ..."의 구문은 "~하자마자 ...했다"는 뜻의 관용적 표현으로 no sooner, scarcely, hardly 다음의 어순에 주의해야 한다. 이 구문들은 as soon as ~ (~ 하자마자)를 사용하면 더욱 쉬운 문장이 될 수 있다. 형태는 "as soon as+주어+과거동사, (주절의) 주어+과거동사"가 된다.

No sooner had I entered the room than I felt the house shake.
= As soon as I entered the room, I felt the house shake.
(방에 들어서자마자 나는 집이 흔들리는 것을 느꼈다.)
Scarcely had he seen me before he ran away.
= As soon as he saw me, he ran away.
(그는 나를 보자마자 달아나 버렸다.)
Hardly had a year passed when another war broke out.
= As soon as a year passed, another war broke out.
(일 년이 지나기가 무섭게 또 다시 전쟁이 발발했다.)
