비교구문 (2)

(1) 비교급에 의한 비교구문

비교급 앞에는 the를 붙이지 않는 것이 원칙이지만, "두 개 중 더 ~한"의 의미로 쓰일 때는 비교급에 the를 붙인다. 또한 the greater part of ~ (대부분의 ~), the latter part of ~ (~의 후반부), the younger generation(젊은 세대), the upper class(상류계층) 등과 같이 비교의 대상이 없이 막연히 그룹을 지어 "~한 편의 것"이라는 뜻으로 쓸 때는 비교급 앞에 the를 붙인다. 이것을 절대비교라 한다.

(이 두 짐 중에서 이것이 더 무겁다.)
The smaller, less representative one is sometimes referred to as the Upper House.
(때로는 규모도 작고, 수도 적은 대표부가 상원이라고 불리어진다.)

(2) 비교급을 이용한 관용적 표현

the+비교급, the+비교급 (~하면 할수록 더 ~하다)

The more, the better.
(많으면 많을 수록 좋다.)

The higher we climb, the colder it becomes.
(높이 오르면 오를수록 더 추워진다.)
all the+비교급+for ~ = all the+비교급+because of ~ (...하기 때문에 더욱 ~하다)

I like her all the more because of her honesty.
(나는 그녀가 정직하기 때문에 더욱 더 그녀를 좋아한다.)
not more than (많아야, 기껏해야)

He has spent not more than 100 dollars.
(그는 기껏해야 100달러를 썼다.) [ 100달러보다 덜 썼을 수도 있다. ]
no more than (단지, 겨우)

He has spent no more than 100 dollars.
(그는 겨우 100달러를 썼을 뿐이다.) [ 더도 덜도 아니다. ]
not less than (적어도)

She is not less beautiful than her sister.
(그녀는 적어도 언니 만큼 아름답다.) [ 언니보다 더 아름다울 수도 있다. ]
no less than (~ 만큼)

She is no less beautiful than her sister.
(그녀는 언니 만큼 아름답다.) [ 언니보다 더도 덜도 않다. ]
A is no more+명사+ than B = A is not+명사+any more than B (A가 ~이 아닌 것은 B가 ~이 아닌 것과 같다)

A whale is no more a fish than a horse is.
(고래가 물고기가 아닌 것은 말이 물고기가 아닌 것과 같다.)

He is not a god any more than we are.
(우리가 신이 아닌 것과 마찬가지로 그도 신이 아니다.)
less A than B = not so much A as B (A라기 보다는 B)

She is less beautiful than intelligent.
(그녀는 아름답기보다는 오히려 지적이다.)

He is not so much a scholar as a businessman.
(그는 학자라기보다는 사업가이다.)
know better than to do (~할 만큼 어리석지 않다)
