비교구문 (1)

(1) 비교급과 최상급

형용사나 부사는 원급의 어미에 -er을 붙여 비교급을, -est를 붙여 최상급을 만든다. 그러나 2음절 이상의 긴 형용사나 부사는 각기 more, most를 붙여 비교급과 최상급을 만드는 것이 원칙이다. 비교급의 구문은 "비교급+than"의 형식을 취하고, 최상급의 구문은 "the+최상급+in+단수형의 비교집단", 또는 "the+최상급+of+복수형의 비교집단"의 형태로 쓰이게 된다.

Gold is heavier than copper.
(금은 구리보다 무겁다.)
This novel is more interesting than that.
(이 소설책이 저 책보다 더 재미있다.)
He is the tallest boy in his class.
(그는 자기 반에서 키가 제일 크다.)
This picture is the finest of all.
(이 그림이 모든 그림들 중에서 가장 훌륭하다.)
Iron is the most useful of all metals.
(철이 모든 금속 중에서 가장 유용하다.)

(2) 원급을 이용한 비교구문

as ~ as ... (... 만큼 ~한)

You may take as many as you like.
(당신이 원하는 만큼 가져도 좋다.)
not so ~ as ... (... 만큼 ~ 하지 않은): so 다음에는 형용사나 부사가 오게 된다. 이런 구문에서 명사가 직접 오는 경우에는 such ~ as의 형식을 써야 한다.

I have never seen so great a man as he.
= I have never seen such a great man as he.
(나는 그처럼 훌륭한 사람을 본 적이 없다.)
as ~ as any + 명사 (어느 ... 만큼 ~한, 어느 ...에도 못지 않게 ~한)

He plays tennis as good as any student in our school.
(그는 우리 학교의 어느 학생 못지 않게 테니스를 잘 친다.)
as ~ as ever+동사 (이제까지 ...한 만큼 ~한, 지금까지 ...에 못지 않게 ~한)

She is as great a playwright as ever lived.
(그 여자는 지금까지 있었던 어느 극작가 못지 않게 위대한 극작가이다.)
as+형용사+as ever (여전히 ~)

His mother is as kind as ever.
(그의 어머니는 여전히 친절하다.)
