놓치기 쉬운 관사

(1) 부정관사

부정관사 a/an은 원래 "하나의(= one)"라는 뜻으로, 발음이 자음으로 시작되는 명사 앞에는 a, 발음이 모음으로 시작되는 명사 앞에는 an을 쓰며 다음과 같은 의미를 갖게 된다.

1) 셀 수 있는 명사 앞에 의례적으로 붙는 경우에는 특별한 의미가 없다.

My brother is a lawyer. (나의 형은 변호사이다.)
He threw a stone at the dog. (그는 그 개에게 돌멩이를 던졌다.)

2) "하나"라는 뜻을 분명히 나타낸다.

I'll be back in a day or two. (하루나 이틀 후에 돌아 올 겁니다.)
Not a man was to be seen. (한 사람도 보이지 않았다.)

3) "같은, 동일한"이라는 뜻을 갖는다.

They are all of a size. (그것들은 모두 같은 크기이다.)
Birds of a feather flock together. (깃털이 같은 새는 함께 모인다. 유유상종)

4) "어떤"이라는 뜻을 나타낸다.

You are right in a sense. (어떤 의미에서는 당신이 옳다.)

5) "~에, ~ 당"이라는 뜻을 갖는다.

He calls me twice a day. (그는 하루에 두 번씩 나에게 전화한다.)
You will be paid five dollars an hour. (당신은 시간당 5달러씩 받을 것이다.)

(2) 정관사

부정관사가 셀 수 있는 명사 앞에만 붙는 것과는 달리 정관사 the는 모든 명사의 단수/복수형 앞에 붙을 수가 있다.

1) 앞에 나온 명사를 되풀이 해서 말할 때 쓰인다.

I bought an interesting book at the bookstore, but I lost the book on my way back home. (나는 서점에서 재미있는 책을 한 권 샀는데, 집으로 돌아오는 길에 그 책을 잃어 버렸다.)

2) 처음 나오는 명사라 하더라도 전후관계로 보아 어느 것을 가리키는지 분명할 때 쓰인다.

Close the door. (문을 닫으세요.)
I'll meet you at the airport. (공항에서 만나 뵙겠습니다.)

3) 명사가 형용사구나 형용사절에 의해 수식을 받을 때 그 명사 앞에 붙는다.

My mother is the fat lady on your right. (나의 어머니는 당신 오른쪽에 계신 뚱뚱한 분이시다.)
The information you gave me wasn't useful to me. (당신이 내게 알려 준 정보는 나에게 도움이 되지 않았다.)

4) 형용사의 최상급, 서수사, only, next, same 등이 명사를 수식하여 그 명사가 특정한 사람이나 사물을 가리키게 될 때는 정관사를 붙여야 한다.

New York is the largest city in the world. (뉴욕은 세계에서 가장 큰 도시이다.)
Change buses at the second stop. (두 번째 정류장에서 버스를 갈아 타세요.)
The same thing happened to me yesterday. (똑같은 일이 어제 내게 일어 났다.)

5) 계량 단위를 나타내는 경우에 "by the+단위명사"의 형태로 쓴다.

In the factory, wages are paid by the week. (그 공장에서는 임금을 주급제로 지불한다.)
Taxies are hired by the kilometers. (택시는 킬로미터 당 요금을 지불한다.)

6) 신체부위에 어떤 동작을 가하는 경우에 "전치사+the+신체부위"의 형태로 표현한다.

She caught him by the sleeve. (그녀는 그의 소매를 잡았다.)
He struck me on the head. (그는 내 머리를 때렸다.)

7) 단 하나 밖에 존재하지 않는 사물의 이름에 붙는다.

the sun (해)
the moon (달)
the earth (지구)
the world (세계)
