(1) 명사의 소유격
Apostrophe s('s)를 붙여 소유격을 만드는 것은 원칙적으로 사람과 동물에 한정되며, 무생물의 소유격은 전치사 of를 이용하는 것이 일반적이다. 그러나 무생물이라도 다음과 같은 경우에는 [']를 붙여 소유격을 만들 수 있다.
1) 시간을 나타내는 명사
He returned home after several years' absence. (그는 여러 해 만에 고향으로 돌아왔다.)
The bus stop is within ten minutes' walk of my house. (버스 정류장은 우리 집에서 걸어서 10분도 안되는 거리에 있다.)
2) 거리를 나타내는 명사
They won the race by a boat's length. (그들은 (보트 길이 하나 정도의) 아주 근소한 차이로 경주에서 이겼다.)
My house is within a stone's throw from the station. (우리 집은 역에서 (돌을 던지면 닿을 정도로) 아주 가까이에 있다.)
3) 가격이나 무게를 나타내는 명사
Give me two dollars' worth of sugar. (설탕 2달러어치를 주세요.)
I bought six pounds' weight of beef at that store. (나는 그 상점에서 쇠고기 6파운드를 샀다.)
4) 무생물을 의인화하는 경우
Nature's works (자연의 작품)

(2) 절대 소유격
소유격 다음에 오는 명사는 다음과 같은 경우에 생략할 수 있는데 이를 절대 소유격이라 한다.
1) 생략된 명사가 문맥상 분명할 때
My car is bigger than John's. (내 차는 존의 것보다 크다.)
2) 상점이나 건물을 나타내는 명사의 생략
a book-seller's (서점), a chemist's (약국), a butcher's (정육점), a shoe-maker's (양화점), a baker's (제과점), a barber's (이발소), a dentist's (치과) 등과 같이 's 뒤에 오는 house(집), store(상점), shop(가게)이 모두 이에 해당한다.
I spent my holidays at my uncle's. (나는 휴가를 삼촌 댁에서 보냈다.)
I have to go to the dentist's every other day. (나는 이틀에 한 번씩 치과에 가야 한다.)
(3) 이중 소유격 a[an], any, this[these], that[those], some, no, which, what 등으로 수식되는 명사는 "of+독립 소유격"의 이중 소유격 형태를 취하게 된다.
This book of Hemingway's is not interesting. (헤밍웨이의 책들 중 이 책은 재미가 없다.)
Any friend of your's will be welcomed. (네 친구라면 누구라도 환영받을 것이다.)
