추상명사의 용법

(1) "of+추상명사 = 형용사"

1) A man of science may not make money. (과학자는 돈을 못 벌 수도 있다.)에서 of science는 "of+추상명사"의 관계로서 scientific이란 형용사적 의미를 갖게 되며, 따라서 a man of science는 a scientific man (과학자)의 뜻이 된다.

2) 또한 "of+추상명사"가 형용사적 구실을 하는 까닭에 be동사 뒤에서 문장의 술부로 쓰이기도 한다.

It is of great use to me. (그것은 내게 아주 유용하다. = It is very useful to me.)
Yesterday I met a man of letters. (나는 어제 한 문학가를 만났다.)
The books are of profit to you. (그 책들은 너에게 유익하다.)
It is of no consequence. (그것은 대단한 것이 아니다.)
of talent (재능있는 = talented)
of experience (경험있는 = experienced)
of learning (학식있는 = learned)
of wisdom (지혜로운 = wise)
of ability (유능한, 능력있는 = able)
of sense (지각있는 = sensible)
of importance (중요한 = important)
a man of the world (세상 일에 정통한 사람)
a man of his word (약속을 지키는 사람)

3) "of+a+추상명사"의 형식도 형용사적 의미를 갖는다.

His knowledge was of a different kind from mine. (그의 지식은 나의 지식과는 다른 종류의 것이었다.)
Belgium's woolen clothes are of a superior quality. (벨기에의 모직물은 품질이 우수하다.)

(2) "all+추상명사"와 "추상명사+itself"

"all+추상명사"나 "추상명사+itself"는 be동사와 함께 문장의 술부가 되어 "매우 ~하다", 즉 "very+형용사"의 의미를 갖게 된다.

He is all attention. (그는 매우 주의 깊다. = He is very attentive.)
She is all beauty. (그녀는 대단히 아름답다. = She is very beautiful.)
The man is discretion itself. (그 남자는 대단히 신중하다. = The man is very discreet.)

(3) "전치사+추상명사 = 부사"

추상명사가 전치사 with, in, by, on 등과 같이 쓰이면 부사적 의미를 갖는다.

He stepped on the girl's foot on purpose. (그는 고의적으로 그 소녀의 발을 밟았다.)
I worked out the math problem with great difficulty. (나는 아주 힘겹게 그 수학 문제를 풀었다.)
with care (주의깊게, 조심스럽게)
with ease (쉽게)

(4) "the+형용사 = 추상명사"

The film is full of the strange and the horrible. (그 영화는 괴기와 공포로 가득차 있다.)
