(1) 보통명사의 총칭적 의미
보통명사는 "~라고 하는 것"이라는 종류 전체를 나타내는 의미로 쓰일 수 있다. "~라고 하는 것"이라는 대표성의 표시는 다음과 같은 형태로 나타낸다.
"a+단수 보통명사"의 대표 단수 : 그러나 셀 수 없는
명사인 경우에는 관사 없이 단수 보통명사 만으로 대표성을
나타낸다.

(2) 보통명사의 추상적 의미 When one is reduced to poverty, the
beggar will come out. (사람이 가난해지면
거지 근성이 나오게 마련이다.)
이 문장에서 beggar는 보통명사로서 "거지"라는 뜻이지만 the beggar가 됨으로서 "거지 근성"이라는 추상적 의미로 바뀌게 되는 것이다. 이와 같이 보통명사에 정관사 the가 붙어서 그 명사가 내포하고 있는 성질이나 직분 등의 추상적 의미를 나타내는 경우가 있는데, 이를 보통명사의 추상명사화라 한다.
