● 관계부사의 종류와 용법

관계부사 where
장소를 나타내는 관계부사 where는 the place where와 같이 장소를 선행사로 취하며,
in/at/on+which로 대신할 수 있다.
This is the place where we used to play.
(여기는 우리가 예전에 놀았던 곳이다.)
= This is the place at which we used to play.
This is the town where Tom was born.
(여기가 탐이 태어난 마을이다.)
= This is the town in which Tom was born.
He works two miles away from the city where he
lives.
(그는 그가 살고 있는 도시에서 2마일 떨어진 곳에서 일한다.)
= He works two miles away from the city in which he lives.

관계부사 when
시간을 나타내는 관계부사 when은 the time when과 같이 시간을 선행사로 취하며,
in/at/on+which로 대신할 수 있다.
Saturday is the day when he is less busy.
(토요일은 그가 덜 바쁜 날이다.)
= Saturday is the day on which he is less busy.
Now is the time when I need him most.
(지금이야말로 내가 그를 가장 필요로 할 때이다.)
= Now is the time at which I need him most.
It was the last day of December when he arrived
home.
(그가 집에 도착한 것은 12월의 마지막 날이었다.)
= It was the last day of December on which he arrived home.

관계부사 why
이유를 나타내는 관계부사 why는 the reason why와 같이 이유를 선행사로 취하며,
for which로 대신할 수 있다.
I don't know the reason why he resigned.
(나는 그가 사임한 이유를 모른다.)
= I don't know the reason for which he resigned.
Tell me the reason why you came here.
(당신이 여기에 온 이유를 말해주세요.)
= Tell me the reason for which you came here.
The reason why he did it is unknown.
(그가 그것을 한 이유는 알려지지 않고 있다.)
= The reason for which he did it is unknown.

관계부사 how
방법을 나타내는 관계부사 how는 the way와 같이 방법을 선행사로 취하지만 선행사와
관계부사가 함께 사용되지는 않는다. 선행사 the way 또는 관계부사 how만이 사용된다.
관계대명사로 대신할 때는 in which로 나타낸다.
This is how she solved the problem.
(이것이 그녀가 그 문제를 해결한 방법이다.)
= This is the way she solved the problem.
= This is the way in which she solved the problem.
I told him how I finished the job.
(나는 내가 그 일을 끝낸 방법을 그에게 말해 주었다.)
= I told him the way I finished the job.
= I told him the way in which I finished the job.
▶ 보충학습 :
관계부사는 형용사절을 이끄는 것이 원칙이지만 방법을 나타내는 how는
선행사 the way와 함께 쓰이지 않으므로 명사절을 이끌게 된다.
This is how she solved the problem.
(이것이 그녀가 문제를 해결한 방법이다.)

I told him how I finished the job.
(나는 내가 그 일을 끝낸 방법을 그에게 말해 주었다.)
