관계대명사 that의 일반 용법
that은 선행사에 관계없이 폭넓게 쓸 수 있는 관계대명사로서 who, whom이나 which
대신으로 사용될 수 있다. 주격과 목적격이 같은 형태이며 소유격은 없다.
다만, 관계대명사 that이 전치사의 목적격으로 쓰인 경우에는 전치사가 that 앞에 놓이지
않는다는 점을 유의해야 한다.
This is the boy who came here yesterday.
= This is the boy that came here yesterday.
(이 아이가 어제 여기에 온 그 소년이다.)
He is the boy whom I met yesterday.
= He is the boy that I met yesterday.
(그가 내가 어제 만난 소년이다.)
I have a book which is very interesting.
= I have a book that is very interesting.
(나는 아주 재미있는 책을 한 권 가지고 있다.)
This is the book which I read yesterday.
= This is the book that I read yesterday.
(이것은 내가 어제 읽은 책이다.)
This is the house which she lives in.
= This is the house that she lives in.
(이곳은 그녀가 살고 있는 집이다.)
This is the house that she lives in.
(이곳은 그녀가 살고 있는 집이다.)
cf. This is the house in that she lives. (×)
You are the very man that I have looked for.
(당신은 내가 찾던 바로 그 사람이다.)
cf. You are the very man for that I have looked. (×)

관계대명사 that의 특별 용법
선행사가 다음과 같은 경우에는 관계대명사 that을 쓰는 것이 원칙이다.
(1) 사람과 동물 두 가지가 선행사인 경우 :

Look at the boy and his dog that are coming this
way.
(이쪽으로 오고 있는 소년과 그의 개를 보세요.)

This is a picture of a man and a horse that are
crossing the river.
(이것은 강을 건너고 있는 남자와 말의 그림이다.)
(2) all, every, some, any, no 등이 선행사인 경우 :

All that glitters is not gold.
(반짝이는 것이라고 모두 금은 아니다.)

He spent all the money that he has.
(그는 그가 가진 돈을 모두 썼다.)

Is there anyone that can speak English?

일반적으로 the same ~ that ...은 동일한 것을 나타내고,
(1 ) the same ~ as ...는 같은 종류의 것을 나타낸다.

(4) 선행사가 형용사의 최상급이나 서수로 수식을 받는 경우 :

(5) 의문사 who가 선행사일 경우 : 주로 반어적 의미로 쓰인다.
