● Would rather / Had better

Study Point 1   Would rather

would rather는「차라리 ~하는 게 좋다」는 기호나 희망을 나타낸다. would rather는 주로 'd rather의 축약된 형태로 사용되며 than과 함께 쓰이기도 한다. would rather의 부정형은 would rather not이다.

I would rather give up the marathon.
   (마라톤을 포기하는 게 좋겠다.)

I'd rather stay home than go out with him.
   (그와 함께 나가느니 집에 있는게 좋겠다.)

I'd rather think it over than decide now.
   (지금 결정하기보다는 좀 생각을 해보는 것이 좋겠다.)

I'd rather leave today than tomorrow.
   (내일보다는 오늘 떠나는 게 좋겠다.)

I would rather not see her again.
   (다시는 그녀를 보지 않는 게 좋겠다.)

I'd rather not go out this evening.
   (오늘 저녁은 나가지 않는 게 좋겠다.)

Study Point 2   Had better

had better는「~하는 편이 좋다, ~하는 게 낫다」는 충고나 권유의 조동사로서 가벼운 명령의 의미가 내포되어 있으므로 사용에 주의해야 한다. had better는 'd better의 축약형으로 주로 사용되며, had better의 부정형은 had better not이다.

You had better go there by taxi.
   (택시로 가는 게 좋겠군요.)

You'd better get up now.
   (지금 일어나는 게 좋을 게다.)

You'd better take an umbrella with you.
   (우산을 가져가는 게 좋겠습니다.)

You had better not start right now.
   (지금 출발하지 않는 편이 좋습니다.)

You'd better not tell the secret.
   (비밀을 말하지 않는 편이 좋겠습니다.)

You'd better not do such a thing.
   (그런 일은 하지 않는 편이 좋습니다.)
