Model Dialog :

A: Hello. This is Bill Thompson from Apex. Is the sales
manager in, please?
B: Hold on, please... I'm sorry, Mr. Thompson. He's out
at the moment.
A: May I leave a message with you?
B: Certainly.

A: 여보세요. 저는 아팩스 사의 빌 톰슨입니다. 영업부장님 계십니까?
B: 잠깐만 기다려주세요. ... 죄송합니다, 톰슨 씨. 지금 외출 중입니다.
A: 당신에게 메세지를 남겨도 될까요?
B: 그럼요.

Speaking Tip : 전화상으로「잠깐 기다려주세요.」라고 말할 때는 Hold on.이라는 표현을 쓴다. 이 말은「전화를 끊지 말고 있으라.」는 의미이다.

- Please hold on. (기다려 주십시오.)
- Hold the line, please. (기다려 주십시오.)
- Would you hold the line? (기다려 주시겠습니까?)
- Can you hold on for a moment? (잠시 기다려 주시겠습니까?)
- I'm putting you on hold for a second. (잠시 기다리십시오.)
- Don't hang up, please. (전화 끊지 마십시오.)

Dialog Practice 1 :

A: Good afternoon. Mr. Tate's office. May I help you?
B: Is Mr. Tate in, please?
A: I don't know. Could you hold on while I check?
B: Yes.

A: 안녕하세요. 테이트 씨 사무실입니다. 도와 드릴까요?
B: 테이트 씨 계십니까?

A: Hello. Kale's office.
